Publishing is the final step in preparing an exam.
During publishing, PrimeExam generates all of the files associated with the composed exam, including:
- HTML exam files
- PDF exam files
- HTML answer keys
- PDF answer keys
Once publishing has completed successfully, the generated files may be reviewed, printed, or copied for distribution.
Before publishing, the exam must first be composed.

Publishing Workflow
Publishing consists of three steps:
- Configure the HTML publishing options.
- Configure the PDF publishing options.
- Publish the exam.
After publishing is complete, review the generated files before distributing them.
HTML Settings
To configure HTML publishing options:
- Open the Exam Editor.
- Select the exam to publish.
- Open the Compose tab.
- Click HTML Settings, or select the HTML tab.
The HTML settings determine how the published HTML exam files are generated.
HTML Output Format
Two output formats are available.
All In One File
All questions are written to a single HTML document.
This option is convenient when the exam will be viewed or printed as one continuous document.
Separate Files
Each question is written to its own HTML file.
Navigation links are automatically added so users may move forward and backward through the questions.
This format is useful when presenting one question at a time.
HTML Layout Options
The HTML settings also allow you to configure:
- Left page margin
- Right page margin
- Choice indentation
These settings affect the appearance of all generated HTML exam forms.
After configuring the HTML settings, return to the Compose tab.
PDF Settings
To configure PDF publishing options:
- Open the Compose tab.
- Click PDF Settings, or select the PDF tab.
The PDF settings determine the appearance of the generated PDF documents.
PDF Layout Options
The available PDF settings include:
- Left page margin
- Right page margin
- Choice indentation
Unlike HTML publishing, all questions for a form are always written to a single PDF document.
After configuring the PDF settings, return to the Compose tab.
Publishing the Exam
Once the composition, HTML, and PDF settings have been reviewed:
- Return to the Compose tab.
- Click Publish.
PrimeExam generates:
- HTML exam files
- PDF exam files
- HTML answer keys
- PDF answer keys
The generated files are saved as a published exam and become available for later review.
The time required to publish depends on the number of questions, the number of exam forms, and the amount of image and mathematical content.
Reviewing the Published Exam
After publishing completes:
- Click Review, or
- Select the Review tab.
The Review tab allows you to examine the generated HTML and PDF files, view answer keys, and print the published exams.

Best Practices
Before distributing an exam:
- Review every generated form.
- Verify that images and mathematical expressions appear correctly.
- Check page breaks and overall formatting.
- Print from the PDF version whenever possible.
- Verify the answer keys before administering the exam.
